Abstract

Introduction: Poisoning in children is an important and preventable cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Acetaminophen is the main drug responsible for unintentional poisoning in children under 12 years of age worldwide. In Colombia, information on this type of poisoning is scarce. The aim of this study was to describe the pattern of acute acetaminophen poisoning in children aged 0 to 12 years reported to SIVIGILA in Colombia from 2016 to 2019.

Methodology: retrospective observational study, all cases of acute acetaminophen poisoning in children aged from 0 to 12 years reported to SIVIGILA from December 27, 2015 to December 28, 2019 were taken. In this study were analyzed demographic variables, the product involved, circumstances of the intoxication, hospitalization, and final condition.

Results : A total of 962 cases met the inclusion criteria, the highest proportion of cases corresponded to the male sex and occurred in the group aged 0 to 5 years. The main route of exposure was oral with 100 % (962), accidental exposure was the most frequent type of exposure with 92.7 % (892) and home exposure was the most reported place of exposure with 99,0 % (952). The main product names reported were acetaminophen and dolexÒ, although there were also intoxications with mixtures of other drugs.

Conclusion: Children with acute acetaminophen poisoning reported to SIVIGILA were predominantly preschoolers, the most frequent type of poisoning was accidental, the predominant route of exposure was oral and most of these were at home. An understanding of the profile of acetaminophen poisonings in children will allow a better knowledge of the problem, which will allow the implementation of prevention and education policies.
