Abstract

Introduction: extreme maternal morbidity (EMM) from the perspective of surveillance and public health provides the possibility of early identification of severe or severe complications that endanger the life of the mother-child binomial to guarantee adequate and timely care that leads to the reduction of the probability of fatal outcomes.

Materials and methods: A crosssectional retrospective descriptive analysis was performed, calculating the EMM ratio, the fatality rate and ENPM and the opportunity of notification in 2019, along with the trends of the last five years. For the analysis, absolute and relative frequencies were established. Microsoft Excel was the software used for data analysis. Joinpoint version 4.7 was used to estimate the trends, considering that significant differences were established with p<0.05 for a significance level of 95%. Results: the EMM ratio for 2019 was 37,1 cases per 1 000 live births; 14 territorial entities were above the national number. The extreme maternal morbidity ratio trend for Colombia from 2015 to 2019 shows an upward trend. Conclusions: the EMM characteristics in Colombia shows the strengthening of the surveillance of the event in the country and the acceptability of the system actors to participate in surveillance actively.> <0.05 for a significance level of 95%.
